Udhampur, Nov 25: BJP MLA from Udhampur East Ranbir Singh Pathania Tuesday stated that the state (UT) government had no role in the selection process of SMVD Medical College, which is governed under NEET guidelines and legal provisions.

He was commenting upon the recent controversy regarding selections at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College.

Pathania was addressing the gathering after inaugurating two significant road development projects aimed at strengthening rural connectivity and accelerating developmental momentum in the region.

He said that certain vested interests were spreading misinformation. “Circumscribing iota of selections by virtue of an Act of Legislature of Jammu Kashmir does not stand litmus test of law, logic and legal permissibility. Rather it offends the right to religion and the right to maintain institutions out of donations from the Hindu shrines,” Pathania said.

He further added that the institution was funded through donations made by devotees, and therefore its functioning must reflect fairness, transparency, and respect for the faith of the people.

Pathania assured the public that corrective measures had been initiated and that only a fair and justified system respecting the sentiments of devotees would be upheld.

Earlier he kickstarted the macadamisation work of the Manwal–Kathail–Samanu–Satrari road, being developed at a cost of Rs 5 Cr under NABARD.

He stated that the project would “usher in a new chapter in the region’s connectivity, ensuring ease of travel and fostering inclusive development.”

Pathania also initiated work on the Garnai Circular Road at Kothi, sanctioned at a cost of ₹80 lakh, describing it as an important link that will benefit local residents and improve accessibility.

Emphasising that connectivity was the essence of development, Pathania reaffirmed that all upcoming roads would be built as fully engineered, durable and high-quality metalled roads.

He added that enhanced connectivity would significantly support education, health services, agriculture, livelihoods and overall accessibility, ensuring equitable development across Panchayats.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of locals.
