Srinagar, Oct 04: Multiple teams from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Saturday carried out a major anti-encroachment drive across several parts of the summer capital, removing illegal structures and roadside obstructions that had been causing inconvenience to the public.

The operation, led by Enforcement Officer Muhammad Sayeed, was conducted simultaneously in several key areas including Residency Road, Dalgate, Sonawar, Boulevard Road, Foreshore Road and Habak. The teams dismantled unauthorized extensions, seized goods placed on pavements, and cleared bottlenecks that were impeding pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Enforcement Officer Muhammad Sayeed said that the drive was part of a sustained campaign to restore the city’s public spaces and ensure smooth traffic flow. “Encroachments on footpaths and road margins not only cause congestion but also pose safety risks to commuters and pedestrians. The corporation is determined to reclaim public areas from such illegal occupation,” the official said.

During the operation, enforcement teams used mechanical support and manpower to remove temporary sheds, display racks, and other unauthorized structures erected by shopkeepers and vendors.

The official said the corporation has received several complaints regarding growing encroachments along main routes such as Boulevard and Foreshore Road, especially in areas leading to tourist destinations. “Such encroachments create unnecessary congestion and spoil the visual appeal of the city. Regular drives are being conducted to maintain discipline.”

SMC officers also interacted with locals during the operation, advising shopkeepers to restrict their activities within their allotted boundaries. The enforcement teams photographed the cleared areas and submitted reports for follow-up monitoring to prevent re-encroachment. [KNT]
