Srinagar, May 5: In continuation with its endeavour of technology dissemination outreach programmes, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Srinagar conducted a two-day training programme on production technology and disease management of silkworms.

A statement of SKUAST-K issued here said that the event was organised for silkworm rearing entrepreneurs and extension functionaries of district Srinagar to provide hands-on training on different aspects of rearing technology from seed production to cocoon harvesting including management of frequently occurring protozoan, bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases during the rearing season that infests the larval stage in particular.

A statement of SAKUAST-K stated that the first-of-its-kind programme was organised in collaboration with CoTS Mirgund and the Department Of Sericulture Kashmir well before the onset of rearing season to benefit the practising rearers entrepreneurs by upgrading their skills with various scientific techniques to make rearing a more remunerative venture.

On the occasion, S A Simnani, Head KVK and Rayees Wani SMS gave an overview of the KVK activities and underlined the need to conduct such skill-orientated programs to equip growers with the latest rearing techniques. Resource person from CoTS, Farhat deliberated on the pathological problems of the worms encountered during the rearing season with a precise focus on economically important diseases like muscadine (fungal) and Flacherie (viral) infesting during the larval period of rearing.

Sehreen Rasool (Department of Sericulture) gave an insight into the issues in production and horizontal expansion of the sector and the remedial measures being taken by the department to address the issues in a holistic approach.

At the end of the programme, Simnani urged the participants to get acquainted and benefitted from various schemes under the HADP programme of J&K.
