SKUAST-K organises awareness programme on minimising pesticide use

Bandipora: Dec 19: A mega awareness programme focusing on minimising pesticide use in agriculture was organised by SKUAST-K ( Shalimar Divison of Plant Pathology) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Bandipora-1 under the HADP Project-18 on Thursday.

The event brought together agricultural scientists, experts, and local authorities to emphasise sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr Shabir Ahmad, Scientist in Plant Pathology, who greeted the guests and participants.

The Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Bandipora, Zaffar Shawl, who was the chief guest of the event, lauded the contributions of scientists and extension workers for their unwavering commitment to disseminating advanced agricultural technologies and training farmers. He appreciated their efforts in fostering progress across agriculture and allied sectors in the district.

Dr Tariq Sultan, Programme Coordinator at KVK Bandipora, underscored the institution’s critical role in raising awareness among farmers about the latest agricultural technologies. He shared insights into KVK’s ongoing efforts to train farmers and equip them with the knowledge required for sustainable farming.

Dr Tariq Rasool Rather, chairman of HADP-18, delivered a detailed and engaging lecture on strategies to reduce pesticide use in agriculture. He highlighted the importance of adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other sustainable approaches to ensure safe and productive farming practices.

Dr Mudasir Ahmad, Assistant Professor of Entomology at FOH SKUAST-K Shalimar, spoke on the vital role of non-chemical methods in tackling pest-related challenges. He elaborated on practices such as biological control, cultural methods, and the use of pest-resistant crop varieties as effective alternatives to chemical pesticides.

Scientists Dr Tahir Saleem, Dr Nazir Ahmad Mir and Dr Saba Bukhari from KVK Bandipora also interacted with the participants, addressing their queries and providing expert advice on pest management and related agricultural issues.

As a key highlight of the programme, Delta traps, essential tools for monitoring specific insect pests, were distributed among apple growers in the district. This initiative aims to enable farmers to adopt proactive pest management practices, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

The event concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing their appreciation for the insights and support provided by the experts. The programme marked a significant step towards promoting sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices in the Bandipora district, ensuring agricultural sustainability and enhanced productivity.
