Srinagar, Oct 13: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) organised a Mega Awareness Programme on "Oilseed Model Villages" (OMVs) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Bandipora. The event, which saw participation from over 150 farmers and farm women across the district, highlighted the Government of India's initiatives to promote oilseed cultivation, reduce edible oil imports, and bolster rural economies.

The OMV programme is being implemented in several Bandipora villages, including Mangnipora, Papchan, Khayar, Panzigam, Asham, Ganasthan, and Kema, with support from KVK Bandipora.

Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-K, graced the event as the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the role of oilseed cultivation in improving farmers' livelihoods and economic resilience in the region.

Prof Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, Director Extension at SKUAST-K, shared insights on innovative farming techniques, encouraging farmers to adopt modern methods to increase productivity and meet the rising demand for edible oil. Dr Tariq Sultan, Programme Coordinator at KVK Bandipora, presented an overview of the OMV programme, outlining its main objectives: achieving self-sufficiency in edible oil production, enhancing farmers' socio-economic conditions, and promoting oilseeds as an alternative crop for sustainable growth.

KVK scientists Dr Tahir Saleem and Dr Shabir Ahmad Ganai conducted an interactive session with farmers, providing expert guidance on modern agricultural practices for oilseed cultivation. The face-to-face interaction allowed farmers to address their queries regarding oilseed production and other programmes run by the Kendra.

As part of the event, quality seeds of Brown Sarson variety Shalimar Sarson-2 for 800 kanal area and organic fertilizer were distributed among more than 150 farmers.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to all participants, marking a significant step towards promoting oilseed cultivation and sustainable agriculture in the region.
