SKUAST-K discusses role of Intelligent Machines in Post-Harvest Handling and Food Processing

Srinagar, May 28:  SKUAST-K conducted a special session on “Role of Newer and Advanced Technologies in Food Processing”. Dr. Nachiket Kotwaliwale, Director, Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana delivered a special talk on the theme.

The session was chaired by Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof. Nazir A. Ganaie and was attended by the students and scientists of SKUAST-Kashmir.

Dr. Ganaie while welcoming Dr. Nachiket spoke about the need to embrace the technologies in efficient handling and processing of food produced, which otherwise suffers a loss of 30-50%.

He also emphasized on the need to innovate the solutions organically that suits the niche crops especially perishable crops like fruits and vegetables. He further deliberated upon the role of modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in food processing sector for entrepreneurship development.

Dr. Nachiket gave a detailed presentation on the challenges and opportunities in post-harvest management of agricultural produce. He highlighted the role of newer technologies like cold plasma, hyperspectral imaging, sensing technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, cobotics, etc. in the post-harvest processing of agricultural commodities. In his talk, he emphasized the importance of developing indigenous machines to address specific regional requirements.

During his presentation, Dr. Nachiket highlighted several critical issues faced in the post-harvest handling such as the loss of produce due to inadequate storage facilities, inefficient transportation, and lack of advanced processing technologies. He pointed out that these challenges not only lead to significant financial losses to farmers but also contribute to food insecurity. Furthermore, Dr. Nachiket explored various opportunities that can be leveraged for post-harvest management. He discussed innovative techniques and technologies that can enhance the shelf life of produce, improve quality and reduce food loss and waste. His lecture also shed light on cutting-edge technological advancements, including smart packaging, precision agriculture, and advanced preservation methods.
