SKUAST-K: A New Era
The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has long been a beacon of academic excellence and innovation in the region. With its roots deeply embedded in agricultural Education, Research, Extension and Innovation, SKUAST-K has consistently evolved to meet the growing demands of the modern world. The latest testament to this evolution is the introduction of a new undergraduate program, B.Tech in Biotechnology, a four-year degree that promises to bring transformative changes to the academic landscape of Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention here that SKUAST-K has also introduced B. Tech in AI, BSc Biochemistry, Microbiology, Economics and Data Science from the year 2024.

For years, students from the Kashmir Valley interested in pursuing a B. Tech in Biotechnology were compelled to leave their homes and seek education in other states of India. This not only posed a significant financial burden on families but also required parents to cope with the emotional challenge of having their children study far away. Recognising these challenges, SKUAST-K has taken a monumental step by launching this program within the valley, making high-quality biotechnology education accessible to local students. After the advertisement overwhelming response was received for the program and 30 students have been admitted to the program this year. The introduction of the B. Tech in Biotechnology is not just an academic program; it is a milestone achievement that reflects the university’s commitment to catering to the needs of the students and the aspirations of the region. This program is set to empower the youth of Kashmir with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in biotechnology, opening up new avenues for research, innovation, and career opportunities. Today, it stands proudly among the top five agricultural universities in India, a recognition that underscores its academic prowess, research output, and contributions to the agricultural sector. SKUAST–K has obtained 36 patents so far and have already been granted 16 patents this year and expected to receive more which are the best figures in entire India.
