SKUAST-J organises ‘Farmer awareness, agri inputs dissemination programme’
Jammu, Jan 17: Agrometeorology Section of SKUAST-Jammu organized one day “Farmer awareness cum Agril input distribution programme” at village Meshian, Miran Sahib, Jammu on Friday.
The programme was organised with the objective to aware the farmers about climate change and its impact on agriculture and also distribution of agri inputs among SC farmers for enhancing their production and to increase their farm income, under the aegis of Dr B N Tripathi, Vice Chancellor and guidance of Prof S K Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu.
Dr Narinder Singh Raina, MLA, South-Jammu and R S Pura was the chief guest of the event. Prof S K Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu was the guest of honour in the programme in which more than 104 farmers, both male and female, participated.
The programme was presided over by Dr Mahender Singh, Professor and Head, Agrometeorology Section who welcomed the gathering and discussed in detail about the importance of organizing such an awareness programme.
He emphasized the methods to reduce the green-house gases emissions from agricultural activities, which contributed to the adverse impact of climate change on agricultural crops over the Jammu region and with the use of weather and climate based agro-advisories in day to day agricultural activities.
MLA, R S Pura-Jammu encouraged the farming community to participate in these types of programmes to benefit from the latest technologies developed by SKUAST-J, Chatha, Jammu and also assured the poor farmers to help by providing various government schemes for their benefit.
He distributed agricultural (agri) inputs to about 104 farmers of Mashian, Miran Sahib, Jammu.
Prof S K Gupta highlighted the various activities undertaken by the University for the welfare of the farmer’s community for boosting their income from various agricultural enterprises.
He stressed the farmer community to come forward regarding their agricultural related problems. He advised the farmers to use weather information
and agro-advisories issued by Agrometeorology Section on biweekly basis in day-to-day agriculture operations and stressed upon the farmers to make more and more utilization of services rendered by SKUAST-Jammu.
Dr B R Bazaya, Chief Scientist and In-charge, AICRP on Weed Management explained to the farmers about effective weed management in different rabi crops, keeping in view the weather condition in order to reduce the input cost. He emphasized the optimum dose and timely application of weedicide for getting maximum benefits to achieve economic and ecological goals with the least efforts.
Dr A K Singh, Professor, Entomology suggested the farmers to spray the crop with proper dose of insecticide at appropriate time in consonance with the weather forecasting in order to manage the major insects or pests in vegetables as well as field crops and suggested the integrated management of aphid, termite and armyworm in rabi crops.
Dr Anil Bhushan, Professor, Vegetable Sciences, informed the farmers about the importance of Agromet advisory in planning vegetable crops. He also demonstrated the farmers about the “Protray nursery raising” technology in vegetable crops and their transplantation in the coming summer season.
Rajpal, Sarpanch, Surinder Kumar, Naib Sarpanch, Naveen Bharti, Suresh Kumar, FCLA and Dharamvir, AO, also participated in the programme.
Shesh Narayan Kumwat, Asif Ali Ph D scholar, Jaskaran MSc also made farmers aware about latest techniques.
