SKIMS treats patients of Trigeminal Neuralgia with rare procedure

Srinagar Dec 11: In continued attempts at ever-enhancing state-of-the art care for patients, the Department of Neurosurgery, SKIMS has cured patients of trigeminal Neuralgia with a novel procedure using interposition of Teflon graft for microvascular decompression of the nerve.

In a statement, SKIMS said so far 14 such patients have been helped by the surgical procedure. “The said procedure is performed only in a few centres of India.

All 14 patients had a disabling and annoying facial pain which did not respond to any medical treatment. A few patients had been treated at some of the leading institutions of the country but could not be cured of the pain,” it said.

These facts were presented by Dr Mudasir Amin MCH Resident Neurosurgery at the weekly grand round.

Director SKIMS and Ex- Officio Secretary to the government Prof. Parvaiz A. Koul expressed his delight over the outcome of the procedure. He hailed the team for such high-end and complex surgeries which have brought relief to the patients and their families and brought laurels to the Institute.

Prof. Mohd Maqbool Wani Department of Neurology who was in chair to moderate the session hailed the efforts of the neurosurgical team SKIMS for treating such a disabling condition with the rare procedure. In an expression of joy, he exclaimed, “this is what SKIMS does".

In charge Consultant Grand Round Prof.Nayil Khursheed Department of Neurosurgery thanked HOD Neurosurgery SKIMS Prof. Abdul Rashid and neurosurgical team. He informed that these high-end surgeries have brought relief to many patients whom this condition had pushed to extremes of depression including having suicidal tendencies. He said that the 100 percent cure for this condition was achieved with almost no complications. He added that SKIMS is the only institution in J&K where such surgeries are being done with such excellent results.
