SKIMS Soura contributes to ‘GenomeIndia Data’ release
Srinagar, Jan 9: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Srinagar has made a significant contribution to India’s genomics research with its role in the landmark release of the ‘GenomeIndia Data’.
This monumental achievement was celebrated at the prestigious Genomics Data Conclave, held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message, lauded the initiative for its transformative potential in advancing personalized medicine, biotechnology, and healthcare research. The ‘GenomeIndia’ project, supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), has created a comprehensive genetic variation catalogue by sequencing the genomes of 10,000 individuals across India’s diverse population.
The database, now accessible under the newly launched ‘Framework for Exchange of Data (FeED) Protocols,’ ensures responsible and transparent sharing of this invaluable resource. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science & Technology (IC), officially launched the FeED Protocols and the IBDC Data Access Portals, marking a new era in India’s research ecosystem.
Representing SKIMS, Prof. Mohd Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS & EOSG, highlighted the importance of this database for tackling region-specific health challenges.
SKIMS, he said, played a pivotal role in sampling and phenotyping 1,274 individuals from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, including Kashmiri Pandits, Kashmiri Muslims, Dogras, Gujjar-Bakarwals, and Baltis.
The samples underwent comprehensive investigations at SKIMS before sequencing at IGIB Delhi and CBR Bangalore.
“This is a proud moment for SKIMS and the nation. The GenomeIndia database enables us to delve into the genetic predispositions of our population, paving the way for targeted healthcare strategies and groundbreaking advancements in disease management,” said Prof. Ganie.
The event witnessed participation from leading genomics experts and policymakers, fostering discussions on data-sharing mechanisms and collaborative research. Esteemed scientists, including Prof. Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath, Dr. Prathima Arvind, and others from premier institutions across India, were present to mark this historic occasion.
The release of the GenomeIndia Data and FeED Protocols is being hailed as a transformative step, placing India at the forefront of global genomics research. Through initiatives like this, India continues to solidify its leadership in the genomics era.
