SKIMS postgraduate resident bags Torrent Young Scholar Award

Srinagar, Dec 27: Dr Tahir Bashir Dar, postgraduate resident from the Department of General and Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS secured the first position and bagged the Torrent Young Scholar Award (ASI-TYSA).

In a statement SKIMS said  that the award recognised the best resident in General Surgery pan India, in the 83rd Annual National Conference, “ASICON” organised by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), which took place in Vishakapatnam from December 13 to 16. The event marked attendance of over 8,000 surgeons from India and beyond, the four-day event featured the presentation of posters and free scientific papers by over 2,500 young surgeons.

The statement said Dr Tahir was selected from top twelve residents selected all over country after a competitive assessment. He was honored with the ASI-Torrent Young Scholar Award for the year 2023, accompanied by a cash prize of Rs three lakh. ASI also sponsored him for a fully funded travel facility and the opportunity to undergo operative surgical training at an International Center of Excellence in the near future. The President of ASI, Dr Sajay Kumar Jain and other dignitaries congratulated the Department of General and Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS for achieving this milestone.

Another resident Dr Jan Mubashir, a Postgraduate Resident in General Surgery, clinched the first  prize for the Best Poster Presentation and the 2nd prize in the Free Paper Presentation category.

Prof Ajaz Ahmad Malik, HOD, Department of General and  Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS said this recognition not only brings pride to SKIMS but also establishes the institution as a hub for cutting-edge advancements in surgical sciences. The Department of General and Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of surgery, setting benchmarks for excellence and innovation he added.

The academic achievement is appreciated by all. The faculty of the General & Minimal Invasive surgery Surgery Department has congratulated the residents for achieving this feat and lauded the continuous determination and perseverance of the all faculty members and reaching such a significant milestone.

Prof. Parvaiz A. Koul, Director SKIMS & Ex-Officio Secretary to Government, Prof  Bashir A Laway, Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS and Prof Farooq A Jan, Medical Superintendent SKIMS congratulated the Department of General & Minimal Invasive Surgery SKIMS for the achievement.
