Srinagar, Mar 9: The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology SKIMS performed 60 pancreaticoduodenectomies, also known as the Whipple procedure, over 2 years with no in-hospital deaths, All Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepatobiliary Surgery Society said Saturday.

In a statement issued here, the society said, “The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology SKIMS conducted 60 pancreaticoduodenectomies over 2 years.  These high-end procedures were performed under the guidance of Prop Sadaf Ali who is the chief of GI HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery at SKIMS.”

The statement said that these complex procedures had been performed with no in-hospital deaths, though, all over the world, the mortality associated with this procedure is up to 5 percent and that they had outperformed the best centres in the country.

It quoted Prof Sadaf Ali as saying that these excellent results had been achieved due to the team effort and an established critical care pathway in the department.

Head Department of GI and HPB Surgery at Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Nisar Hamdani said that a new department had been started from scratch and made into one of the best service departments in the country.
