SKIMS, MPCOS Society roll out PCOS awareness drive
Srinagar, Sep 17: In a landmark initiative to raise awareness about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), SKIMS in collaboration with the M.P. PCOS Society of India, has launched the PCOS Awareness Month under the Government of India’s Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan.
The campaign, aligned with the national health drive initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, represents India’s largest mobilisation for women’s health. Through this effort, SKIMS aims to empower women with knowledge and resources to better manage their health and well-being.
The campaign aims to educate the general public about preventive measures and lifestyle interventions for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a highly prevalent non-communicable disease that significantly impacts women’s health.
The first program will be held at Degree College Bandipora, followed by sessions at Government Degree College for Women, Anantnag; Government Degree College for Women, Pulwama; and Government Degree College, Baramulla. The campaign will culminate with a valedictory program on September 30 at the SKIMS Auditorium.
The initiative will feature a series of expert lectures and interactive sessions covering various aspects of PCOS, including early identification, prevention, and lifestyle modification.
Speaking on the occasion, Director SKIMS & EOSG, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, emphasised the urgent need for awareness on PCOS in the region.
“PCOS is highly prevalent in Jammu & Kashmir, and awareness is critical to educate women about its impact and to guide them towards preventive measures through active lifestyle choices—focusing on weight management, healthy diet, and regular exercise,” he said.
Prof. Ashraf further added that given the profound impact of PCOS on women’s health, SKIMS has taken the lead in conducting awareness activities during PCOS Awareness Month under the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar initiative.
“PCOS is a manageable condition. I appeal to women to seek early medical advice and adopt preventive practices to avoid long-term complications,” he urged.
It is noteworthy that SKIMS runs a dedicated PCOS Clinic, established under the leadership of Prof. Ashraf Ganie,a renowned endocrinologist and the present Director of SKIMS, which provides comprehensive care and management for women with PCOS.
