Skill training on data mining, statistical learning begins at SKUAST-K

Srinagar, Nov 15: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir today inaugurated a weeklong Existing Management Development Programme (E-MDP) on “Applied Data Mining and Statistical Learning Using R and R Studio’ at Wadura campus

A statement said that the skill training is organised by SKUAST-K’s Division of Agri. Economics & Statistics, Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura campus under the sponsorship of the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with the aim to get a basic understanding of how supervised and unsupervised learning works.

Director, Research and Coordinator of MSME skill programs, Prof Haroon R Naik, the chief guest at the occasion, talked about the importance of the MSME trainings in building capacity and skills of farmers, youth, entrepreneurs and students across J&K and Ladakh UTs.

Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, who was the chief guest at the inaugural function, said such training would expose the students to the broader areas and subjects of Statistical Learning and Data Mining across various sectors using hands-on experience and avail the opportunity to grow their career prospects.

The coordinator of the programme, Dr Fehim Jeelani Wani, highlighted that statistical learning theory is not only a tool for theoretical analysis but also a tool for creating practical algorithms for estimating multidimensional functions. Associate Professor, Statistics, Dr Showkat Maqbool, deliberated upon the use of Statistical Learning, Data Mining and related aspects in order to understand the problem or phenomenon with respect to a set of real-world data.
