Shun divisive politics: Altaf Bukhari to political groups

Srinagar, May 22: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Thursday strongly denounced all forms of violence, stating that it has only caused suffering and setbacks for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Emphasising that "humanity must always come first," he called upon political parties across J&K to shun divisive politics and instead focus on public welfare and long-term peace. Bukhari said this while addressing a gathering in Srinagar following the formal merger of the Panther Party’s Bhim Group faction with Apni Party.

The development marks a significant political consolidation in the Union Territory.

Welcoming the Panther Party Bhim Group into the fold, Bukhari said the merger would strengthen collective efforts for peace, stability, and development in Jammu and Kashmir. “The unity of like-minded groups is not just symbolic — it is essential for real change on the ground,” he said.

Reflecting on the impact of decades of conflict in J&K, Apni Party President remarked that violence has only brought pain and setbacks to our people. “Our deepest sorrow is not just for economic deprivation but for the countless innocent lives lost. Humanity should never be sacrificed for any cause,” he said.

Reaffirming Apni Party’s foundational agenda announced in 2020, Bukhari said the party remains firmly committed to protecting the land and job rights of the people and to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. “This is not merely a political slogan but a solemn promise. We will achieve this goal — whether through votes or without them,” he said, hinting at the party’s determination to pursue constitutional and legal means to meet the aspirations of the people.

In a pointed message to other political parties, Bukhari urged leaders to put the interests of the people above partisan considerations. “The time has come for all political entities to rise above personal and party interests. Our people have suffered enough — what they need now is unity, clarity, and sincerity in leadership,” he said.

The merger of the Panther Party BHim Group is seen as part of Apni Party’s strategy to broaden its base in Jammu as well as the Kashmir Valley, particularly among segments disillusioned with traditional parties. Party insiders believe this consolidation will help present a credible alternative focused on governance, development, and dignity. The event was attended by senior Apni Party leaders, members of the newly-merged faction, and workers from both sides.
