Shreya Gupta clinches J&K’s 1st individual international Fencing Medal

Srinagar, July 17: Jammu and Kashmir’s ace fencer Shreya Gupta has made history by winning the Union Territory’s first-ever individual medal at an international fencing event. Gupta secured a bronze medal in the sabre category at the ongoing 2024 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In a stunning display of skill, Shreya outclassed England’s Saunders Nicole 15-3 in the round of 16. She then secured a tight 15-13 victory over Australia’s Hardge Gala in the medal bout. Shreya’s impressive run was halted in the semifinals by Singapore’s Juliet Mind, who won 15-11.

This achievement adds to Shreya’s already impressive international record: Two bronze medals in team events at the Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships (Newcastle 2018, London 2022). Junior bronze medal in the team event at the Asian Championship in Uzbekistan. Participation in approximately 15 prestigious international fencing events

Nationally, Shreya holds both Senior and Junior National Champion titles, with a total of 17 gold, 11 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Her talent has been recognized through her inclusion in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Ministry of Youth & Sports, Government of India, and as a Khelo India athlete.

Gupta’s journey began at the Sports Council Fencing Centre at MA Stadium, Jammu, under coaches Shotu Lal Sharma and Ujwal Gupta. She currently trains at Vijay Bharat Sports Academy in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The fencing community has rallied behind Gupta’s success. Former international player and referee Rashid Ahmed Choudhary extended his congratulations, as did the J&K Amateur Fencing Association through its President, Nisha Sharma, and Secretary, Bhanu Vijay Sharma.

J&K Sports Council Secretary Nuzhut Gul praised Gupta’s consistent performance, stating, “She has been continuously bringing laurels to India, especially J&K UT, for many years. J&K Sports Council will always be there to boost the morale and support young, hardworking, talented players who are helping to bring Jammu and Kashmir on the sports map of the country.”
