Dubjan (Shopian), Jan 11: On Saturday morning, the vast snow-covered meadows of Dubjan, located some 13 Kms from south Kashmir's Shopian town along the heritage Mughal road,  sprang to life with an electrifying winter carnival named after the love legend of Heemal-Nagari.

Children muffled up in several layers of clothing enjoying snow slides, visitors entering the igloos, sports enthusiasts playing snow cricket and the artistes delivering captivating performances were some of the key highlights of the two-day carnival.

The district administration organized the event for the first time, aiming at showcasing the area's awe-inspiring beauty and rich culture to hook in tourists and boost the local economy.

The DC said that all the departments including police, army and CRPF collaborated to make the event successful.

“An overwhelming response to the event is reflective that people desire peace, prosperity and the promotion of tourism”, he said.

“We feel over the moon. It is for the first time we see such a festival like this happening in our district”, said a knot of female students, who were giving finishing touches to a snowman by wrapping a scarf around its neck.

Giggles, laughter and cheerful chatter filled the air as the snowman was completed.

DaniyaMuzaffar, a 10th class student, who won a quiz competition praised the inclusivity of the event

“The event was for all age groups," she said.

Mohammed Ashraf Wani, president Fruit MandiShopian said that such programs were crucial for promoting the off-beat destinations and boosting tourist activities.
