Shopian, Oct 24: In a significant achievement, Shopian Police has secured the conviction of two accused involved in the sexual assault of a minor girl. The case was registered at Police Station Zainapora under FIR No. 150/2022 for offences punishable under Sections 363 IPC and 3/4, 17 of the POCSO Act.

As per an official statement, the Principal Sessions Judge, Shopian pronounced judgment today, convicting Yawer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh. Mohammad Sheikh, and Mehraj Ahmad Dar, son of Ab. Gaffar Dar, both residents of Khawajapora Chitragam, Shopian.

The court sentenced Yawer Ahmad Sheikh under Section 363 IPC to rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of ₹10,000, and under Section 4 of the POCSO Act to rigorous imprisonment for ten years and a fine of ₹20,000. In default of payment of the fine, he shall undergo simple imprisonment for three months. Both sentences shall run concurrently, making the effective sentence ten years of rigorous imprisonment.

Mehraj Ahmad Dar has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years and a fine of ₹10,000 for his role in the offence.
