Shopian, Dec 5: A packed auditorium at Government Degree College Shopian turned into a hub of rhythm and applause on Friday evening as young performers took the stage for the grand finale of the second edition of ‘Shopian Idol’, a music competition organised by the district administration under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The event drew students, locals and music lovers, becoming one of the district’s most vibrant cultural evenings in recent times, shining a spotlight on the rising voices and artistic talent of the region. Seven finalists — shortlisted after several rounds over the past weeks — competed for the title with a mix of Kashmiri folk, Sufi music and Bollywood songs, keeping the audience hooked till the final performance.

“I enjoyed the magnetic performance of all the participants throughout the event,” said Mohammad Amir, one of the attendees, as the hall echoed with cheers and appreciation.

Athar-bin-Khursheed emerged as the winner of Season 2, receiving a trophy, certificate and a cash award of Rs 8,000. Ashiq Ahmad Wani and Manzoor Ahmad Shah secured the second and third positions, bagging trophies, certificates and cash prizes of Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.

Deputy Commissioner Shishir Gupta, who felicitated the winners, praised the participants for their confidence and talent. He said events like ‘Shopian Idol’ offer meaningful platforms for young people and help channel their energies towards constructive avenues, complementing the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir earlier, the DC said the administration is committed to creating cultural spaces that empower youth and open opportunities for them. Judges — including prominent musicians and cultural personalities — lauded the quality of performances, noting that several contestants displayed potential for professional careers in music if nurtured further.

Notably, last year’s ‘Shopian Idol’ finale led to the formation of the ‘Shukru’ band, an outcome organisers say reflects how such initiatives can inspire lasting creative collaborations among youth.
