Shopian court sentences 2 men to rigorous imprisonment in POCSO case
Shopian, Oct 24: Shopian Police on Friday has secured the conviction of two men involved in the sexual assault of a minor girl, marking a significant step in ensuring justice for victims of sexual offences. The case was registered at Police Station Zainapora under FIR No. 150/2022 for offences under Sections 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 3, 4, and 17 of the POCSO Act.
After a detailed trial, the Principal Sessions Judge, Shopian, convicted Yawer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh. Mohammad Sheikh, and Mehraj Ahmad Dar, son of Ab. Gaffar Dar, both residents of Khawajapora, Chitragam.
The court sentenced Yawer Ahmad Sheikh to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 under the POCSO Act, in addition to five years and a Rs 10,000 fine under Section 363 IPC, with both sentences to run concurrently. Mehraj Ahmad Dar was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000.
Officials said the conviction was the result of a dedicated investigation and professional prosecution by Shopian Police.

Shopian Police reiterated its commitment to protecting women and children in the district and maintaining a zero-tolerance approach toward sexual offences.
