Shawarma tops global sandwich rankings; India’s Vada Pav ranks 26th

Srinagar, July 10: Shawarma has been ranked the no. 1 in global sandwich rankings. India's Vada Pav has been ranked the 26th in the list of best sandwiches. A steady rise in popularity and ratings, moving up from the 39th position in the January rankings to 26th in the latest list.

Popular culinary guide TasteAtlas has released its updated list of the 100 best sandwiches in the world as of July 2025, based on over 16,500 user ratings. Topping the chart is Shawarma, the iconic Middle Eastern street food known for its spiced meat wrapped in pita or flatbread. Vietnam's beloved Banh Mi and Türkiye's Tombik Doner claimed the second and third spots, respectively. India’s Vada Pav—a spicy potato fritter sandwiched in a bun—also made the cut, earning the 26th position on the global list.

Although categorised as a sandwich, shawarma is often seen as a juicy and meaty wrap. This popular street food is filled with thinly sliced, tender meat which actually is from middle east gained popularity immensely. It can be made using lamb, turkey, chicken, beef, or a mix of meats, all of which are slow-cooked for hours and basted in their own juices and fat.
