Ramban, Apr 21:  The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained blocked for more than five hours due to the emergent nature of road repair works at the Hingni area of Ramsoo on Sunday.

Officials said that traffic movement, on both sides of the highway, was halted at 11 am, due to cracks that appeared on the road near the Hingni area of Ramsoo.

“The road maintenance agency National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) pressed its men and machinery into service to repair the road stretch at Hingni and a single lane road stretch was prepared around 4:30 pm,” they said.

Stranded traffic between Nashri and Banihal was allowed to move on priority, the officials said.

Earlier, traffic officials advised commuters to avoid travelling on the highway until the restoration work was completed.

“Vehicular movement has been stopped from both sides as cracks developed in the middle of the road at Hingni, Ramsoo,” they said, citing the reason in the advisory.

Meanwhile, in its routine advisory, the Traffic Department advised commuters and vehicle operators not to undertake journeys on the highway, without confirming the status of the road from Traffic Control Units (TCU) in Kashmir, Jammu, Udhampur, and Ramban.

Till late evening, the highway was open and stranded vehicles between Udhampur and Qazigund were being cleared.

However, the traffic movement was slow, due to slippery road conditions and the single-lane road stretches at many places between Nashri and Banihal.
