Srinagar, Dec 20: A fire broke out at Ali Jan Complex, a prominent commercial building located on Maulana Azad Road in Lal Chowk, Srinagar, on Saturday evening caused panic in the busy city centre.

Officials from the Fire and Emergency Services Department said the fire originated in one of the wooden cabins located in the attic portion of the building. “The fire started from a single wooden cabin and subsequently spread to other adjacent cabins. At least three cabins and two rooms were damaged,” an official said.

“The fire was brought under control quickly, and a major tragedy was averted,” the official added.

He said during the firefighting operation, three firemen sustained injuries and were immediately evacuated from the site and provided medical assistance.

Thick plumes of smoke engulfed the complex, triggering chaotic scenes in the area as several fire tenders lined the busy Maulana Azad Road. The complex houses multiple commercial establishments, including food joints and other business units. Witnesses said traffic movement on Maulana Azad Road was disrupted for some time.

“There was panic everywhere, and people rushed out as smoke spread rapidly,” said a local shopkeeper.

Officials said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained and would be known after a detailed assessment.
