Sericulture Deptt sees boost in cocoon trade at Pulwama auction
Pulwama, Sep 9: The Cocoon Auction Market organised by the Sericulture Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir concluded successfully today at Nikas Pulwama, highlighting growing momentum in the region’s silk industry.
The auction witnessed active participation from cocoon growers, buyers, and silkworm rearers, with high-quality cocoons fetching competitive prices. Officials said 421 metric tonnes of cocoons were transacted in Jammu Division and 300 metric tonnes in Kashmir Division, marking a 10 per cent growth in production up to the spring season.
Director of Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, said the Department remains committed to strengthening the cocoon value chain and improving market access for rearers.
He added that the event provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders, boosting both trade and livelihoods.
Growers expressed satisfaction at the rates achieved, describing the auction as a vital opportunity to secure fair returns for their produce. The event also highlighted the sector’s potential to contribute to rural employment and economic upliftment in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Sericulture Development Department continues to promote scientific rearing practices, facilitate market linkages, and support sustainable growth in the silk sector.
