Sericulture Deptt lays out roadmap for achieving self-sufficiency in silkworm seed production
Srinagar, Apr 22: Director Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat convened an important meeting at the Directorate of Sericulture Development Department J&K, located at Tulsi Bagh, Srinagar. The meeting, attended by Manager Seeds, Farmers Managers, and Seed Examiners from various Seed Stations of Kashmir Division, focused on the forthcoming silkworm rearing of 8 lakh Disease-Free Layings (DFLs) of silkworm seed, set to commence from May 1.
During the meeting, the Director emphasised the need for a cohesive, coordinated, and strategic approach from all officers and officials for successful silkworm rearing. It was revealed that the P1 Silkworm Seed Cocoons generated within the department's various Seed Units would be utilized for the production of Bivoltine Hybrid Silkworm Seed, which will be earmarked for distribution among farmers during the year 2025-26. Furthermore, the Seed Cocoons produced by the P1 Silkworm Rearers will be procured by the department for the production of F1 Hybrid Silkworm Seed in various Silkworm Seed Grainages.
The Director, Sericulture J&K, exhorted the officers and field functionaries to make concerted efforts for achieving self-sufficiency in silkworm seed production within the region. He urged them to discharge their duties with unwavering dedication, aiming to realize the vision of making the department self-reliant in silkworm seed production in Jammu and Kashmir.
Highlighting the potential of the Sericulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir, the Director directed the officers and officials to gear up for achieving double silkworm seed production. He lauded their relentless efforts for realizing the vision of double cocoon production, which will not only meet the domestic demand for Silkworm Seed but also position the region as a potential exporter of surplus silkworm seed to other states across India.
