Security situation in Srinagar records marked improvement: IG CRPF
Srinagar, Nov 22: Central Reserve Police Force Inspector General (IG) for the Srinagar sector, Pawan Kumar Sharma, today maintained that the security situation in Srinagar has witnessed a marked improvement.
He credited the stability to the high degree of coordination among security agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters about the current security scenario, Sharma said the CRPF is working closely with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, and the civil administration to ensure continued calm. “Every possible security measure has been taken in Srinagar and other areas,” he said, adding that CRPF personnel have been deployed strategically in the city and its adjoining districts. “The force is doing a good job in coordination with the local police, the Army, and district authorities.”
His remarks follow a series of recent raids conducted by the Counter-Intelligence wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in connection with a terror conspiracy case involving a doctor. Searches were carried out across Srinagar, Anantnag, and Kulgam. Officials clarified that the raids were unrelated to the “white collar” terror module or the Delhi blast case.
Although Srinagar has not reported a terror-related incident in recent months, an accidental explosion on November 14 at the Nowgam police station resulted in the death of nine people and injuries to 32 others. The blast occurred while police and Forensic Science Laboratory teams were handling explosive material recovered during the probe into the “white collar” module.
IG Sharma made the comments on the sidelines of a cricket tournament inaugurated by the CRPF. The tournament, now in its third year, features teams from Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal. This year, 123 teams submitted nominations, out of which 16 were selected through a draw. Sharma said the aim is to strengthen youth engagement through sports, adding that teams are required to include players between the age group of 19-23 years.
“There is tremendous interest in cricket in Kashmir. People participate with a lot of enthusiasm. Through such tournaments, we aim to connect with the youth so that peace and calm remain intact,” he said.
Responding to a question on whether sports initiatives help bring young people into the mainstream, the CRPF official said such engagements have indeed bolstered public support for security forces. He added that the CRPF, which has been stationed in the region for over 35 years, continues to work closely with local communities to maintain harmony.
