Srinagar, Jan 18: The second phase of beautification of Jhelum embankments has started in the summer capital with focus on restoring 24 ghats along the river.

Executive Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control department Bashir Ahmad said the beautification plan includes cleaning upstream and downstream of these 24 ghats, construction of concrete bands, and public utilities. He said illumination will be done around the ghats to enhance the overall aesthetics of the river.

The ambitious venture requires a funding infusion of Rs 19 crore, with a particular focus on establishing river bund connectivity.

Notably, the right embankment is set to undergo modern development like the left embankment's standards, aligning with the Smart City Mission objectives.

"The embankments on the Jhelum will be given a new shape, coupled with rehabilitation and silt removal from bunds. Public parks along the river will witness both creation and refurbishment," he said.

Chief Engineer, Srinagar Smart City Limited, Qayoom Kirmani told Greater Kashmir that the second phase of beautification process has been started.

"We are releasing funds to the Irrigation and Flood Control department for beautification of Jhelum," he said.

The beautification initiative, kick-started in 2018 following approval under the Srinagar Smart City project, is spearheaded by the Irrigation and Flood Control department.

Recently, the government unveiled a picturesque Jhelum riverfront from Lal Ded Hospital to Abdullah Bridge, featuring a bustling bicycle track that has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Adding to the attraction, plans for a refreshment kiosk near the Silk Factory are underway, providing a welcoming space for visitors to enjoy the transformed surroundings.

Smart Cities Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on June 25, 2015, for the development of 100 Cities across the country. Under the Mission, both capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir were selected by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
