Ramban, Dec 7: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday urged people to stay away from the banks of the Chenab river after authorities at the 900 MW Baglihar Hydroelectric Project, Chanderkote, opened all spillway gates to flush out accumulated silt.

Officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation (JKPDC) said the operation was part of routine maintenance. The release of water, however, led to a significant increase in the river’s downstream flow.

SDRF personnel made public announcements across nearby areas, warning residents, travellers, and drivers about the heightened risk posed by the fast-moving water.

“Due to the opening of the spillway gates, the water level in the river has increased. People are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid approaching riverbank areas, as swift currents can be extremely hazardous,” SDRF officials said.

Authorities have emphasised that the advisory is precautionary and aimed at ensuring public safety until water levels return to normal.

Meanwhile the rising water level in Chenab in Akhnoor has damaged standing wheat crops in Garkhal Panchayat. The administration has already issued an alert.
