Srinagar, May 11: The result of class 10th examination announced by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) on April 30, 2025 has raised questions on the academic credibility in the government schools.

As per the figures around 40,000 students from over 1170 government schools across Kashmir appeared in the class 10th Board examinations and over 31000 students have qualified it.

As per the official statistics, dozens of the government schools have registered 100 percent pass rate.

But among these schools boasting 100 percent results include those government schools from which the number of students who appeared in the exams was in single digits. The number of such schools with single digits and boasting 100 percent results is approximately 90.Interestingly, only one student each from five different schools appeared in the exams and was declared qualified thus producing 100 percent results.

These schools include Government High School GHS) Kuragbal Gurez, GHS Hugam Srigufwara, Government Boys High School (GBHS) Viewan Quilmuqam Bandipora, GBHS Harwan Srinagar, and GHS Frisal Yaripora Kulgam.

Such figures have raised questions over maintaining academic credibility and standards in the government schools as the School Education Department (SED) utilises services of huge Human Resource in government-run schools particularly at secondary and senior secondary level.

But after investing funds in crores in terms of salary of the teachers and other investment in infrastructure, only one student appears in the exams. Ironically, the department boasts a 100 percent success rate.

The official statistics have put forth surprising results as out of the 90 schools with 100 percent success rate in class 10th exams majority of the schools have less than five students each, who appeared in the exam.

As many as 14 students from seven government high schools- two students from each school appeared in the exams and qualified. All these schools are celebrating the 100% pass rate and are enlisted in the list of “good performing” schools by the department. But nobody is concerned about the lesser number of schools which otherwise should have been a major concern for the department, instead of the pass percentage of these schools.

The seven high schools from which only two students each appeared in the class 10th exams include Government Secondary School Nazneenpora Shopian, GHS Hardpora, GHS Syed Abidpora Doompora Shopian, GHS Cheki Choland, GHS kalnag Poru, GBHS Saidpora Iddgah Sgr, GGHS Bagwanpora Srinagar and GGHS Fateh Kadal Srinagar.

Apart from these schools there are some other schools which again have above 50 and 70 percent results but the number of students who appeared in the exams is less than five while in some schools the number goes down to three.

The overall pass rate of the government schools across J&K has been registered as 71.80 percent as out of 88983 students who appeared in the exams, 63887 have qualified it.

But given the official statistics, this pass percentage includes those schools across J&K where the number of students who appeared in the exams was less than 10 or less than five.

After the declaration of the results by JKBOSE, the SED prepared the list of poor performing schools which have below 50 percent results. The department also prepared a list of schools with 100% results. But considering the investment made by the department in terms of salary and other facilities, the action must be taken against the schools having meager enrollment of students.

“In some schools, the students are not allowed to appear in exams as regular students. This is done only to have good results and less number of students appear in the exam,” a senior lecturer told Greater Kashmir.

A top official said the department while taking a review of the poor performing schools will also analyse the performance of the schools in terms of the number of students who appeared in the exams.

“We are considering both sides including the pass percentage and the number of students,” the official told Greater Kashmir.
