Srinagar, May 06: Chairman of the Reconciliation, Return & Rehabilitation of Migrants, Satish Mahaldar Tuesday said that despite clear directives from the J&K State Government and the Hon’ble High Court post the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, which unequivocally prohibit the leasing, sale, or allotment of temple properties, widespread violations have surfaced across the Valley.

In a statement, Mahaldar said that temple lands and sacred properties meant to be under strict protection have allegedly been sold, leased, and occupied illegally under the very nose of the administrative machinery. District Commissioners (DCs) and Divisional Commissioners (Div Coms)—appointed custodians of migrant and temple properties—have remained mute spectators as land mafias operate freely.

We have submitted multiple formal complaints to concerned DCs, Div Coms, and senior police officials, demanding immediate cessation of these illegal activities. The Registrar of Societies even issued an official letter warning about illegal trusts and NGOs misusing temple properties, urging strict action. Shockingly, these communications were ignored, he asserted.

A complaint was filed at the Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station seeking an FIR against the illegal trust operating from Durga Nag Temple. Despite further escalation to the Crime Branch and senior officials, no action was initiated, he added.

He continued that frustrated by administrative silence, we approached the court, which has now directed the SHO, Ram Munshi Bagh, to file an Action Taken Report (ATR) on or before May 21, 2025.

He said even after submitting video evidence through social media showing unauthorized construction inside Durga Nag Temple, 12 days have passed with zero response from the authorities.

He said it is alarming to note that even after written admissions by Tehsildar HQ, SDA Vice Chairman, and others confirming that temple properties have been illegally leased, no action has been taken.

The forum appealed to Lieutenant Governor, Divisional Commissioner, and DCs to immediately act, initiate criminal proceedings against illegal trusts and NGOs, seal all properties illegally rented, leased, or sold; and ensure strict compliance with court and government orders to protect temple heritage.
