Jammu, Sep 09: Amid election frenzy, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda Monday appointed former minister Sat Sharma as working president of its J&K unit.

The party has appointed former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta as head of the State Election Management Committee.

A communication to this effect was issued by Arun Singh, BJP National General Secretary.

In addition to Sharma’s appointment, the BJP has named former minister Nirmal Singh as the President of the J&K Election Campaign Committee and Chowdhary Sukhnandan as its Vice President.

A party spokesperson said that these key appointments were intended to bolster the party’s preparations for the elections in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, especially with BJP chief Ravinder Raina, contesting from the Nowshera constituency.

Sat Sharma, a former J&K BJP Chief from 2015 to 2018, successfully contested the 2014 assembly elections from Jammu West and served as a cabinet minister till April 2018.

Sat Sharma is a staunch RSS ideologue and Chartered Accountant by profession.

Having started his active political career in 1997, Sat Sharma had also held several positions in the party and worked to strengthen it at all levels as treasurer, general secretary, in-charge BJP cells, Secretary, election campaign committee of BJP from time to time. In his professional career he has also remained Secretary, the J&K Branch of NIRC of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India in 1995 and its chairman in 1997.

“After assuming his new role, Sharma was welcomed with enthusiasm at the BJP headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, where he reviewed the party’s election campaign activities and addressed party workers, urging them to work towards a decisive victory for the BJP in the upcoming elections,” a party spokesperson said.

Notably, all these four leaders viz., Sat Sharma, Kavinder Gupta, Nirmal Singh and Sukhnandan have been denied a mandate by the party this time.
