Kargil, Jun 22: Sarhad Shauryathon, a race to honour the valour and sacrifice of Kargil heroes, was held at the iconic Kargil War Memorial in Drass on Sunday , drawing a large number of participants from across Ladakh and the rest of the country.

The event was attended by Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC-Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, who lauded the initiative and expressed deep gratitude to the armed forces for their sacrifices and congratulated the organisers for the successful conduct of the marathon.

He added that Sarhad Shauryathon reminds us of the courage of our soldiers and the unity of our people.

The CEC also met Deputy Chief Minister Maharashtra Eknath Shinde and discussed various issues related to Kargil’s development. Shinde assured that a CT Scan Machine will be given to Sub District Hospital Drass and few ambulances will be given for Kargil District.

The Deputy CM also assured of extending support to increase tourism in Drass. Organised in the run-up to Kargil Vijay Diwas, the event combined fitness, patriotism, and remembrance against the backdrop of the very mountains that witnessed the heroism of the Kargil War.

Organised by the Indian Army and Sarhad Pune, the Shauryathon saw participation in various race categories — 5km, 10km, and 21km attracting youth, school students, armed forces personnel, and civilians. Participants ran through the rugged terrain of Drass, symbolically tracing the journey of India’s brave soldiers during the Kargil conflict of 1999.
