Rusted electric pole near Sopore bus stand raises safety concerns

Sopore, Oct 10: A rusted and damaged electric pole near the main bus stand in Sopore has sparked serious safety concerns among commuters, transporters, and shopkeepers, as it supports a high-tension 11,000-volt power line. Residents fear the deteriorating structure could lead to a major accident if immediate action is not taken.

Locals say the pole has been in a weakened state for several months, showing visible rust and leaning dangerously close to nearby shops and the main road. Despite repeated requests to the Power Development Department (PDD) to repair or replace it, no concrete steps have been taken so far.

“This pole is a ticking time bomb. Hundreds of people, including school children and passengers, pass through this area every day. If it collapses, it could cause a tragedy,” said a shopkeeper near the bus stand.

Commuters and transporters echoed these concerns, warning that the damaged pole poses a grave risk, particularly during rains and strong winds, when power lines often spark or sway. Locals have urged the PDD to replace the old pole and ensure the safe alignment of high-tension wires before any untoward incident occurs.

An official from the PDD Sopore, when contacted, said the department is aware of the issue and assured that the damaged pole near the bus stand will be replaced soon. The official added that a survey has identified around five rusted and damaged poles in the surrounding area, and necessary steps are being taken to replace them to ensure public safety.
