Russian strikes kill 14 in Kyiv
New Delhi, Aug 28: Kyiv has been hit by its heaviest aerial assault in weeks, leaving at least 14 people dead, including three children, and injuring 38 others, reports BBC. Emergency services confirmed the casualties as rescuers continued to search for survivors amid widespread destruction in the capital.
The overnight strikes, which damaged several residential areas and government buildings, also damaging EU delegation building, shattered the premises of the British Council, located near the EU Delegation building. All windows were blown out, with debris scattered across the street, reports BBC.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 598 drones, 11 ballistic missiles and 20 cruise missiles across multiple regions during the night, describing the attack as one of the most extensive in recent months, reports BBC.
In response, Russia’s defence ministry claimed its air defences had intercepted 102 Ukrainian drones over the Black Sea and several regions, including Rostov, Samara, Saratov and Volgograd. The scale of destruction has drawn sharp condemnation from Kyiv, which accused Moscow of deliberately targeting diplomatic missions. Ukraine’s foreign ministry described the strike as a direct violation of international law, noting that the EU Delegation building was damaged. The latest escalation comes ahead of a planned meeting between a Ukrainian delegation and US officials in New York on Friday to discuss possible ways to end the conflict reports BBC.
