New Delhi, July 9: Russia has agreed to halt the recruitment of Indian nationals as support staff in its military and ensure the return of those currently serving. This decision follows a firm request from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Prime Minister Modi raised the issue emphatically in his discussions with President Putin, highlighting the Indian government’s concern over its citizens’ involvement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently reported that two more Indian nationals serving with the Russian Army were killed in the conflict, bringing the total number of Indian casualties to four. This prompted New Delhi to demand a “verified stop” to any further recruitment of Indian nationals by the Russian military.

Earlier the MEA has expressed that the involvement of Indian nationals in the Russian Army is a matter of “utmost concern” and has demanded immediate action from Moscow to address the issue. In response, Russia has assured India that it will cease the recruitment of Indian nationals for military roles and take steps to facilitate the return of those already serving. This agreement marks a crucial step in addressing India’s concerns and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
