Srinagar, Dec 4: The Rural Traffic Police in Kashmir have stepped up enforcement across various districts, acting strictly against traffic violations and particularly targeting the use of pressure horns by truck drivers.

Officials said pressure horns, which generate high-decibel sound and cause inconvenience to commuters and residents, have been removed from several vehicles during special drives. “These horns cause harmful noise pollution and inconvenience to the general public. Drivers are not allowed to use them in trucks,” SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir Ravinder Pal Singh told Greater Kashmir.

On Wednesday, enforcement teams carried out a massive drive in Pampore, besides several areas of Pulwama and Shopian, where pressure horns were removed from heavy vehicles. The drive was led by SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, along with DySP Traffic Pulwama-Shopian. A similar operation was conducted in north Kashmir a day earlier, during which challans were issued to violators.

SSP Singh said teams have been deployed across rural belts to curb violations, with special emphasis on preventing minors from driving two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Action is also being taken against parents permitting underage driving.

“We are engaging with schools and colleges to create awareness about traffic rules. Students should learn about these norms from primary classes,” he said.

During the south Kashmir enforcement drive, several challans were issued. Many truckers have reportedly begun removing pressure horns voluntarily following continuous checks, officials said.

“Vehicles found using pressure horns during inspections had the device removed on the spot, and violators were challaned as per law,” the SSP said, adding that enforcement drives will continue to ensure compliance and reduce noise pollution.
