Srinagar, Dec 19: Three more earthquakes, two in the Kargil district of Ladakh and one in the Kishtwar district of Jammu on Tuesday created panic and in the last 24 hours toll rose to 10.

As many as seven earthquakes were recorded as Monday’s seismic unrest continued with a sixth earthquake, registering a magnitude of 3.1 at 9:13 pm. This tremor, centered at 33.32°N, 76.72°E in Kishtwar, struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Both earthquakes occurred in the Zanskar Kargil area of Ladakh Union Territory. On Monday late afternoon, a powerful earthquake was felt across Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir causing panic among the people. The epicentre of the tremor was also located in Zanskar Kargil at a depth of 10 km and its magnitude was 5.5 on the Richter scale.

On Monday after the first earthquake, there were four more. One more in Zanskar Kargil and two in Kishtwar. The back-to-back five jolts were after a 20-minute gap. The jolts caused panic among the locals, especially as most parts of J&K fall under zones IV and V.

The residents of Ladakh, Kashmir and Kishtwar had rushed out of buildings and there is no report of any loss of life or property.

The first earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck Zanskar Kargil in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir regions on Monday late afternoon. The quake struck at around 3:48 pm (IST).
