Rs 700 crore Lal Chowk–Parimpora flyover gets green signal
Srinagar, Oct 30: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that a four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora Junction in Srinagar, spanning seven kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore, has been approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) as part of 19 new highway projects for the Union Territory.
In a written reply to an Un-Starred Question raised by MLA Tariq Hameed Karra, the Minister in charge of the Public Works (R&B) Department said that MoRTH, in its meeting held on June 19, 2025, approved the Action Plan for 2025–26, which includes 19 national highway projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Among these, the Srinagar project envisages the construction of a 4-lane flyover along NH-1, connecting the city’s commercial hub, Lal Chowk, with Parimpora Junction on the outskirts.
The government said that preliminary work on the project has already begun. “Survey and design work is currently underway, while the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and related technical investigations are in progress,” the reply stated.
It further informed that a detailed topographical survey and geotechnical investigation, including Automatic Traffic Counter and Classifier (ATCC) studies at key intersections, are being conducted along the proposed alignment. The department added that the final alignment, plan, and profile (P&P) of the flyover are under preparation.
“The draft copy shall be submitted to the Ministry for approval as per prerequisites so that the structural design, including plan and profile, is finalised and submitted to the Ministry for final sanction before the work is put to tender and taken up for execution,” the department said.
Officials said the proposed flyover aims to ease the chronic traffic congestion along the Lal Chowk–Parimpora stretch, which serves as the main north-south corridor through Srinagar. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the city centre and the northern parts of Srinagar, besides improving connectivity to key highways leading towards Baramulla and Bandipora.
