Rohingya man kingpin of human trafficking racket: Police

Bandipora, Nov 28: The Senior Superintendent of Bandipora police on Tuesday revealed that the Rohingya man arrested in connection with the human trafficking was a kingpin of the racket.

He said Manzoor Alam, from Myanmar who is basically a Rohingya, was involved in illegally selling Rohingya women to people in the area by transporting them to J&K from Bangladesh refugee camps.

He said it was on 23 November that the Hajin police station received reliable information about the illegal trafficking of Rohingya women who were subsequently sold to various people in the area “in lieu of money by marrying them.”

He said it is the criminality on two counts: “first is the illegal infiltration of Rohingya women from Bangladeshi refugee camps into India” and second is their “sale as brides” that amounts to “human trafficking.”

He said in the case, an FIR was registered and as a total of five people have been arrested including Manzoor Alam, son of Mohammad Ilyas, a resident of Myanmar.

“Basically, he is a Rohingya and a kingpin of the entire racket,” SSP Lakshay Sharma said.

He said in the said case, “two Rohingya women were found to be married and necessary legal action as per law has been initiated. Further investigation will continue.”
