Road Safety Month
The National Road Safety month is being held from January 15 to February 14. Like other parts of the country, functions are held in Jammu and Kashmir also in this connection.
Awareness is being created among the people to follow traffic rules and prevent road accidents.
It has been noticed that there is an increase in road accidents. Consequently, there is no end to deaths and injuries in such mishaps. Most accidents occur due to violation of road safety rules. Some mishaps also take place due to bad road conditions.
There is an immediate need to create large scale awareness among the people to follow traffic rules. More the awareness, less the road accidents. This awareness should not remain confined to government functions. This awareness must be at the family levels too.
While driving, the family heads must themselves follow the rules and persuade other family members to do so. Such persuasion at family level has to be consistent.
The youngsters indulging into violation of rules while driving vehicles or riding bikes must be strictly told not to indulge in these acts.
Such motivation at home can save their lives as also the lives of others travelling or walking on roads. The families must not wait for the traffic police personnel to take action against their members, frequently violating the traffic rules on the roads.
They must themselves intervene to set the things right. On their part, the traffic police too must deal strictly with those, violating traffic rules and causing accidents. The traffic police department should be strengthened further with man power and other required facilities.
Their presence is important for implementation of traffic rules and prevention of accidents. Special drives must be launched against the violators. Such drives prove fruitful if conducted regularly. The accidents can be minimised and prevented also, if there is a will to do so.
The will has to be at the people’s level and also at the concerned government departments level. It is the responsibility of drivers not to over-speed dangerously, over-take dangerously and change lanes dangerously. Such callous behaviour leads to accidents.
This has to be stopped. During this road safety month a resolution must be made to follow traffic rules and prevent accidents.
