Road accidents, fatalities down by 35% this year: SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir

Baramulla, Dec 2: Traffic Police Rural Kashmir has issued around three lakh challans this year for violations ranging from over-speeding to dangerous driving, generating revenue of nearly Rs 10 crore for the government. Officials say the strict enforcement has also contributed to a significant decline in road accidents and fatalities across rural districts.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir Ravinder Paul Singh said the department has intensified enforcement drives at multiple locations throughout the year, leading to a 35 percent reduction in accidents and deaths compared to last year.

“We have produced around three lakh challans this year and generated revenue worth Rs 10 crore. The figures will be updated by the end of December,” he said.

He said the focus has been on curbing rash driving, stunt riding and the use of mobile phones while driving. Singh said the department has repeatedly urged parents not to hand over vehicles to minors or teenagers without valid licences. Vehicles driven by minors have already been seized this year, with action taken against parents as well.

“We want to make it clear that strict action will be taken against parents if they allow minors or unlicensed teenagers to use vehicles,” he said.

The SSP advised commuters to exercise extra caution while driving during early morning hours in the prevailing foggy conditions. He said overspeeding during low visibility remains a major cause of accidents.

“In foggy weather, drivers must slow down, use headlights properly and follow lane discipline. Across India, one of the most common reasons for accidents is failure to maintain lanes,” Singh said.

To strengthen awareness, the traffic police have been conducting outreach programmes in schools and colleges, educating students about road safety. Those caught performing stunts on roads are being counselled.

Singh also appealed to passenger vehicle drivers not to overcharge tourists or locals and to avoid overloading, stressing that safety must take precedence over profit.

“We want discipline on roads, and that requires cooperation from everyone,” he said.
