Srinagar, Jul 4: In a significant step towards reviving the Valley’s timeless water navigation routes, the city will soon witness the return of serene shikara rides from Dalgate to Nigeen, traversing the enchanting interiors of Dal Lake, a nostalgic experience that generations fondly recall, said conservationist and environmentalist Manzoor Wangnoo.

"This vision is steadily transforming into reality under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, guidance of Commissioner Secretary Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD), and the commitment of the government to safeguard Srinagar’s ecological and cultural heritage," Wangnoo added.

“Special acknowledgement is due to MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, for his proactive role in ensuring that Khushalsar and Gilsar regain their rightful place on Kashmir’s tourism and ecological map. The water tracking route under revival extends from Khojyarbal to Pokhribal (Chhota Nigeen), further connecting through Nallah Amir Khan, Gilsar, Khushalsar, Anchar, and culminating at Wular Lake, thereby restoring an important heritage corridor for navigation and livelihood,” he added.

This broader rejuvenation initiative includes the restoration of springs, clearing of navigation routes, and continuous de-weeding, now actively managed by the Lake Conservation & Management Authority (LCMA), to whom the twin lakes have been formally entrusted for sustained conservation, he further said.

In line with these efforts, Spring Number 14 at Batyarbal, Khojyarbal, was successfully restored under Mission Ehsaas, in collaboration with SMC. The initiative was inaugurated by SFA Gillani, Mentor, NLCO, in the presence of Farooq Wani, reaffirming the community’s commitment to safeguarding natural water sources for local households and biodiversity, Wangnoo said.

Pertinently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated Mission Ehsaas Phase 4 at Sazgaripora, part of Khushalsar — a site that once faced threats of encroachment but was thankfully preserved through timely intervention and public awareness. “We remain committed to the idea that this collective mission goes beyond physical rejuvenation — it is about restoring Srinagar’s identity, livelihoods, and ecological legacy for generations to come,” he informed. On behalf of my entire team and every well-wisher who has stood by us, I extend heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and faith in this mission. Let us continue to work together for the Kashmir we all dream of, added Wangnoo.
