Residents of Uri village hold protest over disconnection of water supply
Baramulla, Mar 28: The residents of Nambla village in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district staged a protest in the premises of the Jal Shakti Department Uri for “stopping” drinking water supply to the area on the charges of not making agreement with the Jal Shakti department.
While raising slogans against the department, the aggrieved residents, mostly women, said that drinking water has been stopped at a time when we are in the middle of Ramadan.
“The disturbing part is that tap water supply has been stopped at a time when we mostly remain busy with the prayers,” said a woman protester.
Mohd Abdullah, another resident said that nobody is against the agreement and we have told Jal Shakti authorities that before the agreement the department should ensure that all its storage reservoirs are cleaned so that people of the area receive quality drinking water.
He said that the department should have served a notice before stopping the drinking water supply.
“The department should give adequate time before asking for agreement. The people of the area are living below the poverty line and are without any means of income,” added Abdullah.
