The population of stray dogs across Srinagar does not seem to be easing, despite the ongoing dog sterilization campaign by the SMC. Residents across different localities in Srinagar continue to grapple with the problem of dog menace. While expressing his frustration about the issue, Nazim Humayoon, a resident of Bemina told Greater Kashmir that "It has become impossible to walk by foot safely through the neighbourhood". Some areas are particularly plagued by aggressive stray dogs. The new RTO Office road in Bemina is one of those areas. The Anti Rabies Clinic at SMHS received over 8,000 cases of dog bites from April 2023 to March 2024, with most of the cases reported from Srinagar only. While responding to questions about the efficiency of sterilization process, Dr Tawheed Ahmed, Veterinary Officer, SMC said "it will take around 3 to 4 years before we will see noticeable results on the ground". Residents across the city are calling for urgent action to address the dog menace that continues to plague their lives.
