New Delhi, June 3: The Election Commission of India (ECI) Monday said it was ready to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir that recorded the highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in the last four decades.

Addressing a news conference in New Delhi to give an overview of the marathon seven-phase 2024 general elections that concluded on June 1, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said the commission was ready to hold assembly polls in J&K.

He said that J&K recorded the highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in the last four decades with 58.58 overall percentage while Kashmir recorded a 51.05 percent turnout.

Kumar said that there was no major incident reported during polls anywhere in the country including J&K.

He said that nowhere in the world 642 million voters cast their vote in any electoral exercise and a record 312 million women voters exercised their franchise in the general polls.

The CEC said that this time only 39 repolls were conducted in the entire country as against 540 repolls in 2019.

He said that 75 international election visitors from 23 countries observed booth polling in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha polls concluded on June 1 while votes would be counted on Tuesday.
