Srinagar, Nov 7: The Resident Doctors, GMC Srinagar and Associated Hospitals, on Friday, expressed objection and concern regarding the communication issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, J&K, denying maternity and paternity leave entitlements for Senior Residents and Tutors (Non-PSC).

“While the order acknowledges the eligibility of residents for such leave as per applicable rules, the clause denying pay and allowances during the leave period is deeply unjust and contrary to both ethical and humanitarian principles,” a statement of the Resident Doctors GMC Srinagar and Associated Hospitals Association issued here said.

The statement said that maternity and paternity leaves are not privileges, but fundamental rights recognised across all sectors, intended to safeguard the well-being of families and ensure a humane work-life balance.

“To deny them financial security during a legally sanctioned leave period adds yet another layer of exploitation to an already overburdened workforce. Such a move is regressive and demoralising, and it undermines the dignity of medical professionals who dedicate their lives to public service,” the statement said.

It urged the concerned authorities to immediately review and revoke this discriminatory stipulation and ensure that all residents availing maternity or paternity leave receive their full pay and allowances for the duration of the leave, in line with national and institutional norms.

The statement said that the resident doctors form the backbone of our hospitals, and policies that disregard their rights and well being threaten not only morale but also the quality of patient care.

“Let this serve as a unified stand: we strongly oppose this order and condemn the coercive enforcement being carried out by the GMC administration. We demand fair, compassionate, and lawful treatment of all resident doctors under the purview of the Health and Medical Education Department. The RDA reiterates its unwavering commitment to stand by its members and is prepared to take all necessary steps to ensure justice and fairness prevail.”
