A video that went viral on social media showed a private SUV being driven at high speed on Boulevard Road, zigzagging dangerously through traffic. “The busy stretch, known for its heavy tourist footfall and regular movement of pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters, became a scene of alarm today as a vehicle was weaving past other cars, narrowly avoiding mishaps,” said a commuter.

Acting swiftly after the video surfaced, the Traffic Police City Srinagar mobilised teams and identified the erring driver, a resident of Kupwara. Officials said that the driver was summoned and counselled by the authorities. Meanwhile, in a public apology, the driver admitted his mistake, stating that his actions were wrong and had put his own life as well as the lives of others at risk.

To mention over the past few years, Srinagar has seen several incidents of overspeeding, stunt riding, and reckless manoeuvres, involving both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. In many cases, videos circulated on social media have played a crucial role in bringing such violations to light, prompting prompt action by the Traffic Police.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, SSP Traffic City Srinagar Ajaz Ahmed said there would be zero tolerance against any form of traffic violation, including underage driving, overspeeding, and stunt riding. He said offenders would be dealt with strictly under the relevant provisions of law. “We will continue our crackdown on such violations. Public cooperation is essential in identifying offenders. Where counselling is required, it will be done, and where strict action is necessary, it will be taken,” he said.
