Banihal, Sept 3: A 21-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy onboard the Sangaldan–Baramulla train on Wednesday, with help from railway staff and railway police. Both mother and child are safe and under medical care at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Banihal.

The woman, identified as 21-year-old Akhtara Bano, wife of Mohammad Ashraf, resident of village Sumber in Tehsil Ramban, was being taken to Government Maternity Hospital Sher Bagh Anantnag when she developed severe labour pains during the journey.

Station Superintendent Abdul Baseer Bali told GK that the railway staff and GRP personnel, along with her relatives, arranged space for her inside the train, where she delivered the child between Sumber and Khari railway stations.

He said an ambulance from Banihal hospital was summoned immediately, but before its arrival, a team of volunteers from Banihal Volunteers NGO, along with their ambulance, shifted the mother and newborn from Banihal Railway Station to SDH Banihal.
