Rains lash plains in J&K; snowfall over higher reaches

Srinagar, Apr 27:  Heavy rains continued in Jammu and Kashmir over the weekend, with the Meteorological Department (MeT) forecasting more precipitation in the coming days.

The MeT officials said that in the last 24 hours, significant rainfall was recorded across various areas of Kashmir.

They said Srinagar received 4.5 mm of rain, Qazigund 10.2 mm, Pahalgam 20.8 mm, Kupwara 15.1 mm, Kokernag 9.8 mm, Gulmarg 8.6 mm, Jammu 2.3 mm, Banihal 2.3 mm, Batote 22.8 mm, Katra 4.6 mm, and Bhadarwah 16.4 mm.

The higher reaches that included Gurez and Machil received light snowfall during the past 24 hours.

The department has predicted light to moderate rain and light snow over higher reaches, accompanied by thunder, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds at some places, with the possibility of heavy rain in isolated areas until April 29.

Following this, from April 29 to 30, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy with scattered light rain and thunder.

A brief respite is anticipated from May 1 to 5, with generally dry weather forecasted.

However, concerns persist over fluctuating temperatures, with Srinagar recording a minimum of 10.5 degrees Celsius, Qazigund 8.4 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 6.3 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 7.9 degrees Celsius, Kupwara 8.1 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg 2.4 degrees Celsius, Jammu 19.3 degrees Celsius, Banihal 10.2 degrees Celsius, Batote 9.7 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah 9.8 degrees Celsius.

The relentless rainfall has led to water logging in many areas, disrupting normal life and posing challenges for residents.

There are also fears of flooding and landslides, especially in low-lying and hilly areas.

The authorities have advised caution and urged people to stay indoors during heavy downpours.

Heavy rainfall is expected at most places in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 48 hours.

The main impact of this weather system would be seen up to April 29 evening and during this period few places in Kashmir and Jammu can see very heavy rainfall.

During the next 48 hours, moderate to heavy snowfall is expected over the higher reaches like Sonamarg, Gulmarg Affarwat, Razdan Pass, Zojila Pass, Sinthan Top, Sadhana Pass, Peer Ki Gali, and Gurez Valley.
