Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Virdi Kumar Birdi said that a terror attack took place in the interior area of Shaheed Gunj and a major hunt has been launched to track down the terrorists.

The incident took place in the Shal Kadal area and the deceased has been identified as Amrit Paul Singh, 31, of Amritsar, Punjab while the grievously injured has been identified as Rohit Mashi, 27, from the same state.

Police said that the area had been cordoned off soon after the incident.

“Terrorists fired at a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar, who succumbed to the injuries. One more person is grievously injured and evacuated for medical attention. The area has been cordoned off,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a post on X.

Police officials said that the duo was engaged in the timber business.

“They have been shot from point-blank range with a pistol,” Police said. “Amrit Paul Singh succumbed before he was taken to hospital. The injured have been evacuated to hospital.”

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Virdi Kumar Birdi visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

“The incident occurred in the interior of Shaheed Gunj area,” V K Birdi told Greater Kashmir Wednesday evening. “While one of them was killed, another received a bullet in the abdomen and is being treated.”

The Kashmir Police chief said that a massive hunt to track down terrorists was underway in the area.

Today’s terror attack took place almost a month after the Bemina incident in which a cop was injured.

Three terror associates were arrested along with weapons for attacking the policeman.

Terrorists had opened fire at Selection Grade Constable Muhammad Hafiz Chad, son of Ghulam Hassan Chad of Mathiya Bund Hamdaniya Colony Bemina.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the heinous terror attack on the two civilians in Srinagar.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the civilian killed in the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

In a tweet, the Lt Governor said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the heinous terror attack in Srinagar on Amritpal and Rohit from Amritsar. I condemn in strongest terms this brutal act, which has snuffed out an innocent life. In this hour of grief, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Praying for the speedy recovery of injured Rohit. A team of doctors is doing their best to take care of him. No efforts will be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice. Directed the civil and Police administration to ensure all assistance to the families.”
